Venetian news about the election of the ruler of the Ulus of Jochi after the death of Khan Uzbek

This article analyzes and introduces Venetian accounts of events in the Ulus of Jochi in the early 1340s. The political events in the Ulus of Jochi surrounding the death of Khan Uzbek and the accession of Khan Janibek to the throne have been covered in various sources. The most important of these are the chronicles of Rus' and an Arabic manuscript by a contemporary describing the biographies of the Mamluk Sultan al-Malik an-Nasir and his sons. Neither provides precise indications of the time of Khan Uzbek's death, or if they do, they do so incorrectly. They also lack precise dates for the beginning of the reign of his son Janibek. Venetian sources, which have not previously been used in this context, may be helpful in resolving this issue. These accounts will help clarify the chronology of events in late 1341. From reports from the consul of the Venetian Tana, received by the Venetian Senate no later than March 7 and April 1, 1342, it can be concluded that Uzbek Khan died in October or November 1341, and Janibek, after the murder of his two brothers, became ruler of the Ulus of Jochi no later than December of that year. Thus, the interregnum in the Ulus of Jochi was brief – from October/November to December 1341.
