From the History of Qazaq-Chinese Trade

The article examines some features of the initial period of Qazaq-Chinese trade and the role of Russian officials in it. The rapprochement of the Qing and Russian possessions in the northwestern part of Central Asia in the second half of the 1750s led to the emergence of spontaneous border trade between the subjects of the two states, which was formally illegal for a long time. Qazaq-Chinese trade emerged in the final stages of the defeat of the Dzungar Khanate by Qing troops in the summer and autumn of 1757. At first, it was mainly khans, sultans and elders who participated in the trade, and later ordinary Qazaq nomads. The Qazaq sultans and the most authoritative and respected elders of the Qing court were given a monopoly on trade in northern Xinjiang. However, it was not so much the Qazaq nobility as the Asian merchants who benefited most.
