Abstract

The study is centered on the status of Mongol commanders Kuremsa and Muguchey in the territory that is to the west and east of the Dnieper River. The main problem here is the lack of precise data on their origin. Based on direct and indirect data, it is probable that they are the sons of Orda and Chagatai. They were the commanders of the tamma and were completely dependent on Khan Batu for their land allocation in the Ulus of Jochi. So, we can conclude that the status of Moguchey did not allow him to demand Galich (in the form of “dai Galich!”, “give me Galich!”) from Prince Danila Romanovich in 1245. This is the only mention of Moguchey in the chronicles. Under the name of Mochi-Yebe he is also mentioned by Rashid ad-Din in his Jami’ al-tawarikh  among the sons of Chagatai. John de Plano Carpini calls him Mouci and believes that he was older than Kuremsa. Batu, the Khan of the Ulus of Jochi, allocated lands to Moguchi between 1243 and 1245. The latter remained here until 1248, when he went to the kurultai in Mongolia to represent the Chagatayids. The article also suggests that in 1243-1245, Khan Batu appointed Kuremsa to control the western frontier in today's Ternopil and Khmelnytskyi regions of Ukraine, and Kuremsa may have stayed here until the late 1250s. Both princes had equal status and were the tamma commanders.
