The article contains a translation of the Chinese part of a bilingual Sino-Turkic tombstone (epitaph) found in the modern
city of Xi'an in the People's Republic of China (PRC). The inscription was composed in honor of the Uyghur prince Qarï
čor tegin, who died in 795 in the imperial palace in Chang'an, the western capital of the Tang Empire (618–907). The
Chinese-Turkic bilingual inscription contains important biographical information which, when placed in the context of the
political history of the Uyghur Khaganate (744–840), the history of its relations with the Tang Empire (618–907), and the
genealogy of the Uyghur rulers, sheds light on the most important event in the history of the Khaganate – the change of
the ruling Yaglakar dynasty to the Ediz dynasty, which was not adequately covered in the stone monuments of the Uyghur
era. The inscription's historical and cultural significance is due to its representation of another example of the Turkic runic
script, composed outside the Uyghur Khaganate. The inscription has survived intact, unlike the stone monuments in the
steppe that were mostly destroyed by natural phenomena.
