Abstract

The article reviews the new book by Qazaqstani historian and political scientist Erlan Karin, titled “Ot Kassackia do Qazaqstana”
(“From Kassackia to Qazaqstan”, Astana: National Museum of the Republic of Qazaqstan, 2024. 130 p.). The book is a scientific
catalog of a collection of antique historical maps donated to the National Museum of Qazaqstan by the author. The collection
spans from the 16th century to the 1940s and includes maps from Europe, America, the Ottoman Empire, China, Japan,
Russia, and the Soviet Union. The maps are arranged in chronological order, making it easier for researchers to understand
the historical context of each map. What makes this collection unique is that it includes not only European, American, Russian
and Soviet maps, but also rare maps from the Ottoman Empire, China, and Japan. These maps show the historical territory
of Qazaqstan and demonstrate the evolution of Qazaq statehood. The book provides a valuable resource for scholars and
historians interested in understanding the history of Qazaqstan and its relationship with other countries. With each new era,
these ideas become more and more detailed. The early medieval abstract knowledge of Europeans about mythical Tartary and
Kassakia was replaced in the New Age with detailed information about the Qazaq Senior, Middle and Junior Zhuzes, known
as Hordes, as well as cities, rivers and lakes. The review highlights the strengths of the book, including its wide coverage of
historical maps and detailed bibliographic descriptions. The author has done a significant job collecting, systematizing, and
introducing unique historical cartographic materials into wide scientific circulation.
